Halo Reach tells the story of the violent fall of the colony the game is named for. The first contact between humankind and the Covenant is about what you'd expect, based on their subsequent history: brutal, chaotic, and infused with all the desperation of a struggle for the two species' very survival, with no quarter asked on either side, and none given. A small boy, known as John-117, is caught in the midst of the struggle. Soon to be called by another name--Master Chief, savior of the human race--the boy's only concern now is for survival. In the middle of a situation that would destroy most children his age, John instead finds strength in struggle. The future hero's character is, fittingly, forged in the heat of battle. This is as much his story as that of the colony whose destruction started the epic intergalactic war chronicled throughout the Halo series.
